Catalpa

Catalpa spp.

Catalpa is a bold deciduous tree with oversized heart-shaped leaves, upright clusters of white flowers, and long seed pods that give the canopy character well past summer.

Catalpa brings a distinctly generous texture to a landscape. The leaves are large and soft-looking, the branching can read almost tropical from a distance, and the flowers arrive in showy clusters that stand out against the foliage in late spring or early summer.

It is most effective where there is room for a broad crown and where the dramatic seed pods can be treated as part of the tree’s seasonal display rather than as debris. In the right place it feels informal, generous, and a little theatrical in the best way.

Microclimate

Catalpa suits open, bright sites where the crown can spread and where reflected heat is not paired with chronic drought stress during establishment.

Neighborhood observations

In a neighborhood setting catalpa works best as a tree with enough sky around it to show off the flower clusters, oversized foliage, and pendant pods.
