Garden thyme

Thymus vulgaris

Garden thyme is a low woody herb valued for concentrated fragrance, culinary use, and small nectar-rich flowers in warm sunny sites.

Thyme does its best work close to the ground, where the fine leaves and compact branching can soften an edge without reading as loose or floppy. Brushing past it releases scent immediately, which makes it especially useful along paths, steps, and kitchen garden borders.

It is a plant for restraint rather than pampering. Sharp drainage, full sun, and moderate neglect usually produce tighter growth and stronger aroma than rich soil or constant irrigation.

Microclimate

Hot stone edges, gravel bands, and raised herb beds suit thyme particularly well because crowns stay dry and light reaches the base.

Neighborhood observations

In neighborhood plantings, thyme often excels in small leftover sunny pockets where larger herbs would look coarse or demand more water.
