Lewisia

Lewisia cotyledon

Lewisia is a compact evergreen rosette perennial grown for clear spring color and its ability to thrive in sharply drained rock-garden conditions.

Lewisia has an almost alpine neatness to it: fleshy rosettes at the base, then bright flower stems that seem larger and more polished than the plant itself. It is one of the best options when a planting needs jewel-like spring color without bulk.

The key is crown drainage. It appreciates cool-season moisture but resents sitting wet, especially where winter rain collects, so raised pockets, wall crevices, and containers often suit it better than flat heavy beds.

Microclimate

Lewisia responds more to drainage than to raw heat. Bright exposures with gravelly soil and winter runoff away from the crown are ideal.

Neighborhood observations

In neighborhood gardens it often succeeds in troughs, retaining-wall ledges, and small raised pockets where irrigation is light and drainage is fast.
